Why stone takes a harder life in Southwest Florida
Travertine and marble are the default in Gulf coastal construction, indoors and out, and homes here ask more of that stone than almost anywhere else in the country. Pool decks and lanais take chlorinated splash-out, sunscreen and rain in the same week. Interior floors take fine quartz sand carried in from Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and the Venice beaches. Salt air reaches stone in properties along the barrier islands whether or not a window is open.

Travertine is porous, which is why the wrong clean does lasting harm
Travertine is a beautiful natural stone, but it is also highly porous. Aggressive or improper cleaning can open the pores of the stone, leaving it more vulnerable to staining from spills, pet accidents, dirty mop water and everyday foot traffic than it was before it was cleaned. That is the specific risk with stone. A poor carpet clean gives you a poor result; a poor stone clean gives you a permanent one.

A honed interior travertine floor, a shower that has been closed and damp for years, and a pool deck exposed to chlorine and full sun are not the same work, and we do not price or process them as one. Exterior stone usually needs different equipment, different dwell times and a different sealer than the same material laid indoors twenty feet away.
